Reason #47 to change the admin password on your wireless router:

I just accidently reconfigured somebody else's router because I thought it was mine... haha OOPS.

We lost to Penn State??!? AT HOME???!? Glad I didn't see it live I guess. Wow. PSU??

In other sad sports news, the Seahawks played not very well. Gotta love Antwaan Randle El... But of course he's always on the team that I don't want to win.

At this very moment, I am compiling OpenBSD from source. That's right.

Microsoft released an official patch for the WMF vulnerability today. Use Windows Update or see MS06-001.

Props to MS for getting it out today.

Last week there was a MAJOR vulnerability discovered in Windows. (It's a huge hole that has always been there and you have to wonder how nobody has found and published it before, but apparently this is the first time it's been publically known and widely-exploited.)

If all is as it's being reported, this thing is BAD. It's very hard to protect against. There aren't major viruses using it yet, but there almost certainly will be soon. Your machine can be compromised and infected by whatever malware uses this exploit just by viewing an image on a website or in an email.

This affects every browser, email client, IM client, etc. on Windows. Mac users are safe.

I just found out about this, and I'm not sure yet what advice to give. Probably you should install Ilfak Guilfanov's patch, which is linked from the pages I link to below. I'm about to try it on my Windows machines.

Update 1/4/2005: After installing the unofficial patch on several of my machines and reading the news for another day, I'm going to go ahead and recommend that you install the unofficial patch.

For more details, see these pages or ask google:

KB 912840 -- Microsoft's security advisory. (Unfortunately, this contains a bunch of misleading comments downplaying the severity of the problem.)

hexblog.com -- Ilfak Guilfanov's site with download links and a FAQ

WMF: patches and workarounds explained -- further discussion on what the unofficial patch does to protect you that Microsoft's recommended actions do not do.

Changelog:
1/4/2005 1411 CST -- Add more links.

As of about 8:45pm last night, Target still had Serenity widescreen DVDs. (Best Buy did not.) The shelf says $19.99, but at the checkout it came up as $16.99. Shiny!!

Wow.

I don't have time to write about this in depth or even make a pretty list of links, so I'll leave the analysis and commentary to others for now. I'll just say:

Be careful what CDs you buy and stick in your computer, kids.

http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=27426

Also, the fact that the Sony rootkit can be used to circumvent Warcraft's anti-cheating software is hilarious.

Okay, since non-techies aren't going to understand my cryptic post or the technical discussions I link to... I might post a summary/non-technical-explanation later. but basically:

Some Sony music CDs automatically install evil software on your computer.

This particular software only affects Windows, so Mac users are safe for now.

DO NOT buy any audio CD with DRM (copy protection).
2nd-Nov-2005 12:54 am - Installing Win2k

Bringing a fresh install of Windows 2000 Pro up to date takes longer than I expected... The Win2k install went great -- nice and unattended. But then the updates begin...

Install SP4... reboot... install IE6... reboot... update Windows Update components... reboot... WU pass 1 -- 25 critical updates... reboot... WU pass 2 -- 1 critical update... WU pass 3 -- install DirectX 9.0c...

This could go on for a while. And this is just to bring Windows itself up to date. Next I get to install Office 2000 and update it.

Everything is going smoothly. No complaints. I just didn't realize how many steps it would take.
